Poliziano and Breakfast: a new work and personal
As was tradition, the poems in the eighth , or rooms, were generally typical of the compositions of chivalry, used to celebrate business of kings and lords in games and contests, also taken from the work of intent Poliziano "rooms for the tournament, in which its Renaissance poet aims to celebrate, at least formally, the victory of the brother of Lorenzo the Magnificent, Giuliano in the tournament organized by the same lord of Florence in 1475. Only formally, because in fact, even if the protagonist of the story is Julian (or Julius, as it is called), police are more dedicated to enhancing the power of love (a theme that, therefore, is dominant), taking as inspiration the mythological story of Iulus that, initially scorning the love, can not stand the sight of Simon, a nymph wood, and the arrows of Cupid.
E 'can say, therefore, that the poem of Poliziano binds only minimally to the tradition of the compositions in the rooms. If we find a link with works of the time, catches the eye in the eighth compositions already impregnated with the humanities, in which the narrative is frequently interrupted by digressions mainly of mythological character, a point that was found in the work of police. Both, as we said, the absence of any reference to historical reality and the real story of Julio, is connected to the above mentioned, the idealized and stylization of the characters, especially the Julius and the woman he fell in love, Simonetta: the first, reflecting the mythical archetype of Hippolytus, is a handsome and courageous, devoted to hunting and poetry and the other, looking and God's attitude is like a nymph (recall the classic) and symbolizes the power of of "kidnap" the lover's heart (stilnovistica taking the concept of the woman and her redeeming feature).
does not only here, however, references to this work: in addition to references to classical (Also made by the recovery of some Homeric situations such as the meeting between Odysseus and Nausicaa, which inspired one of the two protagonists of the opera, or the image of the environment that changes your feelings, in this case the presence Simonetta) and sweet stilnovo (of which there are also signs inspiration, in some passages, the Guinizelli and his conception of love that purifies the base man), there are references to Petrarch (Simonetta which is identified with a white deer, the frequent use of oxymorons), Dante (Beatrice as Simon) and the new current of Neoplatonism (Love is the engine of the world). All this does is confirm a principle appellant in the police: the so-called "docta varietas," to which the poet incorporates in his style, making it rich and refined, elements from both the authors of the classical and post classical era than that, as we have just seen.
Not only that, but to show that the link between different art forms (typical Renaissance design), Botticelli seems to repeat in his paintings that Angelo Poliziano gives a description of Venus, Another important character of the poem. Venus, the goddess, as we know and love in ancient civilizations, embodies the beauty that springs from the union of matter with spirit, that is, by virtue of its beauty, promotes spiritual growth (the so-called Earthly Venus, as opposed to celestial, whose function is to spread God's love in the world, according to the distinction which from the Renaissance philosopher Marsilio Ficino), just as Simon against Iulus.
In conclusion, the elasticity of the scheme of the work and the strong reference to other authors, we can say that police have not wanted to bind to a particular genre, his work expresses more like its culture and its taste personal desire to find their own style.
